Article Excerpt When a new Badger State Ethanol manufacturing plant opened less than a mile west of a railroad crossing on Rt. 69, just south of downtown Monroe, Wisconsin, train traffic increased by nearly 800 percent per week. The Office of the Commissioner of Railroads for Wisconsin, Monroe city officials, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation realized they had to do something to avert what now had become a potentially more dangerous situation, and to address the concerns of the approximately 11,000 residents of the southwestern Wisconsin town.
"It's a very, very difficult decision as to where to allocate funds for safety upgrades at railroad crossings because of the great many locations that can use them across the state," emphasized Rodney Kreunen, long-time Commissioner of Railroads for the State of Wisconsin. "This office is charged with making those decisions, which we certainly don't take lightly. Obviously, we want to avoid railroad/auto collisions."
