The old adage, "what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger" is trite true, as the winemakers in Temecula's Wine Country are seeing firsthand. After half the region's grape vines succumbed to Pierce's Disease, the area is now on the rebound. Growers and vintners alike are replanting and investing millions of dollars in new vineyards, wineries, restaurants and bed and breakfasts.

Pierce's Disease is the insect-borne bacterial infection that caused an estimated $20 million worth of damage to Temecula vineyards. The scourge, spread by the hard-flying glassy-winged sharpshooter, is now under control, thanks to low-key pesticides, natural predators and vineyard practices.

"It's hard to say how this happens and I wouldn't wish Pierce's Disease on anyone, but where it hurt, it has made us stronger," said Peter Poole, president of Mount Palomar Winery.

Just as Northern California bounced back from a bout with the vine-destroying phylloxera epidemic more than a decade ago, so has the Temecula Valley recovered from this near-fatal encounter with Pierce's Disease. The grape growing region now is home to about two-dozen wineries and more are on the way.

Leading the way is Jim Carter, a born-again entrepreneur from Orange County who is betting upwards of $20 million that Wine Country will become a destination resort on par with the fabled Napa Valley...
