Cruising for more business: industry on the rebound as port seeks additional ships.

Within the last decade, the San Diego Unified Port District has lost--and regained--a share of the nation's lucrative cruise ship business. And now, it wants more.

Last year there were 117 dockings of ships that used San Diego either as a home port or port of call. Each docking generated an estimated impact of more than $2 million locally. The dockings are expected to increase to 125 by the end of this year, and to more than 150 in 2004.

According to a feasibility study completed in March, the cruise industry had an impact of $248 million on San Diego's economy in 2002. That included what the ships spent on fuel, food, supplies, and repairs, in addition to what passengers and crews typically spent shopping and visiting local attractions. Some also stayed in area hotels before and after taking cruises.
