From defense contractors to rental car services, businesses owning fleets of cars or trucks groan at the thought of vehicle license fees tripling later this year.

"It's one more nail on a California business' coffin. There's only so many nails you can put on a stud before it cracks," said Armando Freire, president and owner of Dimex Freight Systems Inc. of San Diego.

The state's trucking industry will suffer a double hit because its annual weight fees will double too, going from $1,700 to $2,500 per truck.
