Chief Martin sees seventh consecutive reelection.

CHOCTAW -- Chief Phil lip Martin, longtime leader of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, won his seventh consecutive four-year term when he received 64.4% of the vote in a re-election held earlier this month.

Since Martin was first elected in 1979, the tribe has opened more than two dozen businesses, including the nearly $600-million Pearl River Resort, which features Silver Star and Golden Moon hotel-casinos, a water park, lake, white sands beach and Hard Rock Beach Club.

At age 77, some people believed Martin might retire rather than seek re-election, but he has repeatedly said there were several projects he'd like to see in place before he leaves office. The Mississippi Business Journal recently caught up with Martin, who shared his goals, projects and plans after serving office.
