LUCEDALE -- The date was June 25, 1903, and it seemed like any other sleepy Thursday in this small Southeast Mississippi town that had incorporated only two years previously. But the farm animals that used the town's busiest daytime commercial corner of Main and Mill streets to bed down at night were in for an awakening -- and so were the town and its people.
At precisely 9 a.m., G.M. Luce opened the doors to a new bank, housed in a nondescript wooden building on Main Street. A respected entrepreneur and visionary, perhaps G.M. Luce knew the Bank of Lucedale, originally capitalized at a mere $25,998, would not only become an icon of the community but grow into a multi-state financial institution that would adapt and flourish with time.
If he did, he was right. A century later, the bank is still going strong, though under a new name -- aptly, Century Bank. It has nine offices in Mississippi and Alabama with total assets of approximately $185 million. But not everything has changed. A Luce is still the bank's chief officer, and the family and the bank are proud of their roots.
