Last December, the Birmingham Steel facility in Flowood quietly changed hands to Nucor Corporation, the nation's largest steel producer and recycler.
In May, Nucor Steel Jackson opened its doors to the, public for the first time when it hosted the first annual Nucor Mississippi Community Leaders Forum, where 170 federal, state and local officials and civic leaders braved pending rainstorms to tour the facility and talk about large-scale recycling, innovative manufacturing technologies, education initiatives and community concerns.
"When we come into a community, we like to open the lines of communication with community leaders, legislators who represent the area and state regulators to discuss environmental concerns and other issues," said Jim Sheble, general manager for Nucor Steel Jackson Inc.
