MARKET DIARY

Stocks rose across the board in the week ended June 18 as new data hinting at an improved economy lured investors back into the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.2 percent, the S&P 500 Index gained 1.3 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index gained 1.9 percent. Local stocks in the LABJ 200 index gained 0.5 percent, with computers and electronics the brightest local segment, up 6.3 percent for the week. Local restaurant and retail companies were up 3.2 percent, while real estate stocks slid 6 percent. Some notable winners were Aames Financial Corp., a consumer financial services company, up 28.9 percent to $2.90 a share; footwear maker Vans Inc., up 17.7 percent to $8.12; and 3D Systems Corp., a maker of three-dimensional imaging systems, up 17.5 percent to $7. Notable losers included camera maker Panavision Inc., down 20 percent to $6, furniture maker Virco Manufacturing Corp., down 14.1 percent to $7.18, and biotechnology company Cytrx Corp., down 14 percent $2.28. Advancing stocks outpaced decliners on the LABJ by 105 to 87, while 25 stocks set new 52-week highs versus only three setting new lows.
