Times have changed and now that we all have good color printers we can expect consistent and predictable results when we create maps. But we know that some problems still interfere with our ability to create just the right map to illustrate a specific condition to our clients.

First in the hearts of urban appraisers is the street map, the most commonly required and least likely to be accurate of all digitized map types. whenever street maps are mentioned, I hear about inaccuracies and missing streets. It doesn't help that some producers of digital street maps only update their maps every two years.

Street Atlas USA

Some companies do try to keep streets up to date. DeLorme (www.deforme.com) updates its base maps at least once a year when it makes a general update to its Street Atlas USA program. A company representative told me that it is not always possible to add streets that are known to exist but have not been verified by local authorities.
