Candidates need to share vision

As the 2004 election draws closer, the political parties supporting President Bush and Sen. John Kerry have become increasingly accusatory in what I assume is an attempt to recruit the highly desired "undecided voter." This negative posturing on both sides may have the opposite effect on these voters.

Arguing over which candidate is more patriotic should be moot at this point. Both men have unquestionably served their country. Both wish to continue this service as president of the United States.

The differences between Bush and Kerry lie not with their commitment to America but with their vision for America. These visions are divergent enough to differentiate these men in the eyes of the voters without resorting to the finger-pointing of the past several months.

The country we live in provides us an opportunity to give voice to our own personal vision for America. I hope that in the weeks leading up to the election, voters take the time to closely examine what this vision is for themselves. I also hope voters educate themselves on what each candidate's vision is and how they plan to achieve it.

If both parties forget that we, too, have hopes for this country, they risk losing the chance to prove that they share our hopes. I urge President Bush and Senator Kerry to show us their vision of America.
