Predictions differ widely on economic recovery: is recession over, or is a rally months away?

The recent government report on U.S. gross domestic product failed to reveal a magic number that could push the economy toward a robust rally, but many economists remain convinced better times lie ahead.

The GDP, which measures all goods and services produced in the country, rose 1.6 percent, less than the expected 2.4 percent. Bill Natcher, an economist at National City Corp. in Cleveland, predicted before the report an even more bullish figure, 3 percent.
