Retail with a mission: Global Gifts expects 12% growth this year, more to come.

Some retailers may be struggling with sluggish sales this holiday season, but business is booming at one Indianapolis store.

And at Global Gifts, the impact of a good year can be felt around the world.

Founded in 1988, the not-for-profit store sells goods produced by unemployed or underemployed residents of developing countries. The more money it makes, the more it invests in inventory--boosting individuals' incomes along the way.

Sales this year are expected to reach $224,000, 12 percent more than 2001's $199,000 total. Store Manager Sam Carpenter expects sales to increase another 10 percent next year.

That's no small accomplishment for a retail outlet operated almost entirely by volunteers.

"There are challenges with it, but rewards, too," said Carpenter, Global Gifts' only fulltime employee.
