The discovery of forbidden antibiotics in seafood in 2001 has led to worldwide political turmoil, resulting in several bans, boycotts and special regulations on imports of food from third countries.

Fallout from all this has been so severe that European importers and processors of fishery products from third countries have banded together as the Seafood Importers and Processors Alliance (SIPA) in order to bring some sense into testing standards.

Legislation dealing with residues of veterinary and human medicine in food products appears to be designed so that the presence of a small group of biologically active substances at any detectable concentration can transform high quality food products into waste material, said Dr. Jan Kwakman, president of SIPA.

Due to lack of knowledge of the effects of intake of low levels of this group of antibiotics, he said, the principle of zero-tolerance is being applied.
