It's looking at three more aspects of bringing us back: Personalities, personality, and reflexivity. ("Personalities" and "personality" may sound alike, but trust me, they are two different things with respect to publications and sites run by more than one person.) All three of these traits show up in many successful (but not all) magazines. Two of the three are a little more difficult to do in Web sites, but worth considering.

I haven't done a survey of typical content sites; I wouldn't know where to begin such a survey. (What are your candidates for important content-oriented Web sites? Send me a note; I'll draw up a list.) Few of the commercial sites I check regularly do well in any of these areas; quite a few noncommercial sites, particularly Weblogs, do much better--sometimes to an extreme.
