Four very different projects made winners of both the engineering firms behind the designs and the communities affected by their work.
The American Council of Engineering Companies -- Mississippi (ACEC) recently presented Engineering Excellence Awards to Neel-Schaffer Inc., Calvert-Spradling Engineering Inc., Wolverton Engineering Inc. and Williford, Gearhart & Knight Inc.
Judy Adams, Mississippi's ACEC executive director, said this year's winners married environmental and aesthetic improvements with economic progress for their communities.
"These projects added value to their communities...their whole standard living," said Adams.
ACEC entries are judged on five categories -- originality, innovation, and application of existing techniques; the technical value to the engineer profession; social and economic consideration; complexity; and meeting and exceeding owner/client needs.
This year's judges were Rep. Cecil Brown, Jackson State University engineer professor Yadong Li, and Richard Broome, city engineer for Clinton.
Grand Conceptor Award Neel-Schaffer Inc., Jackson Riverview Parkway
Neel-Schaffer took home the top award for the design of the Riverview Parkway -- a roadway and unique bridge that; stretches across the spillway of the Ross Barnett Reservoir. The firm's design added two much needed lanes for the 25,000 vehicles that cross the dam everyday at a cost...
