Metal roofs have been popular for a long time with commercial buildings in Mississippi. But now metal roofing has become increasingly popular for use on homes for people who want something that is cooler and more long-lasting than the traditional fiberglass shingle roofing.

Metal roofs are particularly in demand for rural homes, says Stacey Slade, manager of Steel Builders Supply, Hattiesburg.

"People are tired of replacing the shingle roofing so often," Slade said. "The average life of standard fiberglass shingles is 10 to 12 years. After that they have to replace them. If the metal is put on properly, chances are it is the last roof they will ever have to worry with. We are seeing a lot more increase in metal roofing sales. It is really beginning to grow unbelievably."

Metal roofing systems initially cost two to three times the amount of shingle roofing, but can last 25 to 30 years or longer. Slade said the Galvalume substrate has only been on the market for 30 years, and...
