Most people think of landscape architecture as being related to plants. And while plants are an important part of outdoor designs, increasingly other elements such as attractive benches, brick paving and sculpture are being used to create outdoor "lifestyle centers," says Alan Hoops, land planning group team leader for Johnson Bailey Henderson McNeel Architects, PA, Jackson.

"We have noticed lately some of the higher-end retail developments want to create spaces for people to spend some time outside of the store," Hoops said. "They are tying in to outdoor eating areas, and trying to put the emphasis back on the pedestrian and not the automobile."

Two retail centers that are using such a concept include the Madison Market U.S. 51 in Ridgeland and the Colony Crossing in Madison.

Many local zoning ordinances have "greenscape" requirements that set minimum standards for landscaping. There are also stormwater management plan requirements for urban areas of the state.
