Phase III Stack Project: full throttle; Mississippi companies at helm of complex flyover bridge project in Jackson. (Construction Mississippi).

JACKSON -- Two companies began work in February on the $58-million, three-year Phase III Stack Project.

Hill Brothers Construction and Engineering Company of Falkner and Michael Baker Jr. Inc. with an office in Jackson are working on the directional interchange connecting Interstates 20 and 55 and U.S. 49 in a complex plan that requires mostly night and weekend work to increase safety and minimize traffic congestion.

"It's equivalent to building a major office building in the middle of an interstate highway," said Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) Commissioner Chairman Dick Hall. "Keeping the area safe with 150,000 cars a day going through it is going to be a challenge."

Scheduled for completion in December 2006, more than five miles of the three major highway arteries will be reconstructed during this phase of the project. A major part of the construction includes the addition of a new flyover bridge that will link motorists traveling U.S. 49 North to either I-20 West or 1-55 North without having to merge.
