Dr. Lawrence Silver, professor of marketing at Mississippi College (MC) in Clinton, said he has one central lesson in ethics he works to instill in his business students: "If you put money ahead of what you think is right, you'll wind up with neither -- you won't have any money or self-respect."

Business ethics -- derided at times as the ultimate oxymoron -- is still a hot topic for industry and financial markets alike, still reeling from corporate scandals of the past few years. The fraud at WorldCom (now MCI) reached all the way to the Clinton campus and made the consequences of unethical behavior crystal clear to students. "They see the damage from what's been done," Silver said.

One segment of the education community in Mississippi may carry a special mission to educate business students in moral values -- most of the state's Christian colleges have a business school offering bachelor's and master's degrees in various academic disciplines like accounting, business administration and management -- and many make a strong commitment to teach ethics from a specifically Christian viewpoint.

Dr. William Penn, professor of economics and business at Belhaven College, emphasizes what- business ethics instruction at Belhaven is not -- "We're not teaching it as what the Bible says about basic economics...
