"It sounds like a cliche, but it's not -- anyone who stops learning and educating themselves is going backwards," said Aubrey Burns Patterson, chairman of the board and CEO of BancorpSouth, and president of the American Bankers Association. "There's no such thing as maintaining the status quo.
"Learning is a lifelong process," Patterson continued. "Whether you're a CEO or a person involved in hands-on manufacturing you have to continue to improve your skills. It's a universal issue if you're going to enhance your competitiveness, individually and as a state."
Patterson keeps up to date in his field by doing a number of things, including reading, something he said there's never enough time to do. Patterson reads trade journals, academic journals, newspapers and magazines, and also tries to make room for fiction and nonfiction leisure...
