JACKSON -- The writing was on the wall for yet another professional sports team in Jackson when Mississippi Indoor Sports. Inc. announced April 4 that it would suspend operations and allow the Jackson Bandits to abandon the Mississippi Coliseum during the 2003-04 season.

When asked if he was surprised by the hiatus, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum executive director Michael Rubenstein said, "No -- I wish it had been more surprising."

"You can look back at a series of recent failures," said Rubenstein. But he quickly added that Jackson wasn't alone among smaller cities in recruiting teams. "You can probably find dozens of regional markets that have a checkered history in professional sports," Rubenstein said.

But the Jackson Senators, opening their season in Smith-Wills Stadium on May 12, plan to succeed where others have failed with a combination of new amenities (both fan and team-friendly ones) and strong support from the city and their ownership.
