Two Northwest suburban teens will become world-class athletes this summer when they join a contingency of 7,000 Olympians from 160 countries to take part in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Ireland.

Yet just as Meagan Quarles, 16, of Rolling Meadows and Kenneth O'Reilly, 17, of Hanover Park, compete locally in Special Olympics with uninhibited joy, they approach these world games with nothing but excitement.

"I'm excited. I've never been there," Quarles says. "I can't wait."

"It's cool," O'Reilly adds. "It's going to be my first time out of the country."

The two were nominated by their coaches and selected by their respective Special Olympics areas to join the Illinois delegation. Quarles is one of seven gymnasts from the United States to compete, while O'Reilly is the youngest member of the men's volleyball team from Illinois.

Together they will be part of Team USA, made up of 35 athletes from Illinois and 1,000 athletes...
