SPRINGFIELD - The last thing Yolanda Elementary School second-grade teacher Karon Lebkowsky did most afternoons was gather the children around her for "Good News/Bad News."

Sitting cross-legged around a circle, each child would share some happy news from the day - a perfect score on a math test, maybe, or plans for a slumber party - and something not so good - like a pair of skinned knees or an unkind remark heard at lunch.

On Thursday, the last day of classes before summer vacation, the children were unanimous: The bad news of the year was that "Mrs. Lebko" is retiring.

"She's really nice, she's really funny, she's very beautiful," 8-year-old McKenzye May said earlier at recess.

"She's very kind," her friend...
