BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN I HAD A JOB THAT entitled me to a Tony vote, the ballot would arrive in the mail several weeks before the ceremony, and I'd spend time every day until the deadline staring at it and agonizing over what to do. There might be four great supporting-actress contenders, three brilliant stage sets, and two strong plays to choose from. In other categories, there might be no standouts.
