And here's why: The company is housed, literally, in a bedroom of founder Darren Purcell's home. "That was one of the keys to the startup of Purcell Productions," Purcell says. "It had to be from home. When I hear the phrase 'stay-at-home mom,' I always think, 'Hey, there are stay-at-home dads, too!'"

ACT ONE

What began in 1998 as a freelance enterprise remains, essentially, a one-man passion play. "Purcell Productions was founded because I was tired of working for someone else," he explains. "It's just been me since the company's inception."

Purcell's professional training in camera operations and video editing came incrementally both on the fly and on-the-job. "I had my own video camera and took some classes in college," he says. "I interned at KHSC-TV 46 in Ontario, California, where I learned how to work a camera, run tape, and so on." In 1995, Purcell joined Hollywood-based Bloomfilm, where he spent three years working as a production manager, finisher, and editor. "I learned a tremendous amount about the video production trade from some great teachers," he says...
