The printed product is part of the fabric of every business. As such, print's volume has a direct relationship to the gross domestic product -- the broadest measure of the overall health of the economy.

Over the past few years, printing sales have closely mirrored overall economic growth. "Nationwide, first quarter 2003 printing sales were up 2 percent from first quarter 2002 levels," according to Ron Davis, chief economist for Printing Industries of America, the largest graphic arts trade association in the United States. Although not robust, this is a positive beginning to 2003 after two straight years of decline.
