The entrance to Stevenson Elementary School in Lombard has grown more colorful this month, thanks to the efforts of first-graders and the Hilton Garden Inn Oakbrook Terrace.

Some Hilton volunteers teamed up with about 70 students to plant red, yellow and pink blossoms. The hotel chain aims to help schools celebrate the importance of gardening and environmental awareness.

Before digging in the dirt, the students learned about the parts of a plant.

"Roots grow on bottom," said Perla Hernandez of Villa Park. "When it rains, the roots stretch out to get water and then the stem grows."

Students also drew their own flower for a placard that was installed next to their flowers.
