SPRINGFIELD - The prospects of a balanced state budget were thrown into disarray late Friday after the Illinois House voted down proposals to end various tax breaks that Gov. Rod Blagojevich counted on to fund his $52 billion spending plan.

Specifically, $100 million largely destined for suburban schools may be jeopardized. The governor said lawmakers had to approve higher casino taxes and end various tax breaks to pay for it.
