With those around them flourishing, area players suffered through a difficult second day at the boys tennis state tournament in Friday, ending the 2003 season for all but a select few.

Action in the main draw continues today with semifinal matches scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Hersey. Championship play is scheduled to start around noon.

Brian Hanus of Palatine remains alive one more day, but in the consolation bracket, after dropping a disappointing 2-set match to reigning state champion Ryan Heller of Glenbrook North.
