CHARLESTON - Friday was a relaxing day for some but a nerve- wracking one for others at the 109th running of the boys track and field state meet at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Stadium.

The relaxation part of the program came from three favorites entering the competition - Prospect's 3,200-meter relay team, and Dave Viken of Rolling Meadows and John Adamczyk of Fremd in the pole vault.

Viken spent most of his morning in a lawn chair next to the pole vault pit. When the required 14-3 height that would get him into Saturday's finals came up, Viken calmly left his chair, removed his sweats and cleared the height for his only jump of the day.

"The ideal situation for me was to take as few jumps today as I possibly could," Viken said. "This worked out much better than I could have ever hoped for."

The second seed, Adamczyk, will join the top seed coming into today's finals. He took a different route to Saturday...
