Months before Nissan announced it would build a plant in Madison County, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) was already making preparations for the project.

"MDOT worked with the Mississippi Development Authority to perform some preliminary engineering prior to Nissan picking Mississippi so that when we were picked, we were far enough along that we could meet the schedule for opening the interchange,". said Chad Wages, engineering manager for the state. "That was very important to the project."

The most high-profile infrastructure project was the construction of a new cloverleaf interchange, frontage road and connection roads to provide access to the new Nissan plant. The $34.6-million contract for construction of the I-55/Nissan Interchange was awarded to Angelo Iafrate Construction, LLC, of Baton Rouge, La., in January 2001, and was completed last year.

The project began approximately two miles south of the I-55/Mississippi 22 interchange near Canton and extended north to the existing south interchange ramps at the Mississippi 22 interchange. It provided for the construction...
