MERIDIAN -- The theory of Interstate 20 becoming an "Automotive Corridor" certainly has a lot of promise. The narrow base for the theory is the Mercedes location just east of Tuscaloosa and Nissan's Canton plant just north of Jackson.

Wade Jones, president of Meridian's East Mississippi Business Development Corporation, is a firm believer and includes Louisiana in the corridor. Some stretch it well beyond 1-20 to South Carolina and Texas. But when you localize it to East Mississippi-West Alabama, despite limited success so far, even the most skeptical admit the theory's validity.

And when such notables as Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove and would-be Republican Gov. Haley Barbour choose it for an early campaign issue, to the delight of the East Mississippi area, the attention is magnified several times.
