Five-tenths of a second was all that kept Lexie Viggiano out of today's 100-meter final.

"I was upset," said Viggiano, whose time of 12.87 seconds was ninth-best among those trying to qualify for the eight-person final. "But it made me even more motivated for the long jump."

After a 90-minute cool-down period, the South Eugene senior wasted little time in making up for the disappointing start to her day.

On her first jump of the first round, Viggiano leaped a personal best 18 feet, 4 inches to easily win the long jump final Friday in the opening day of the Class 4A state girls track and field championships at Hayward Field.
