VENETA - Phil Bustamante held his hands to his head as he surveyed the damage that Friday morning's thunderstorm wreaked on his property.

Awakened by the sudden cloudburst, the Veneta resident narrowly missed being crushed by an oak tree that fell in his yard, he said.

"I escaped death by a second," he said. "I still can't believe it."
