Leon McKenzie isn't sure how much longer he can keep up with the pace of his job.

The longtime Benson track and field coach figures he'll at least go through next season and then decide after that.

"This job has been all-consuming," said McKenzie, in his 19th year with Benson. "I've reached all the goals that I've set. The thing that's scary about excellence is that everybody wants to repeat it. Staying at the top of the mountain is very rewarding and very difficult.

"Because what goes up, must come down."

For now, McKenzie is enjoying the steep upward climb that his girls track and field team continues to take.

Benson, the four-time defending state champion, is again the heavy favorite to capture its fifth straight title at the Class 4A girls state track and field championships at Hayward Field, taking place...
