Churchill senior Sol Rexius was the top seed in the 110-meter high hurdles at last year's Class 4A track and field championships at Hayward Field.

Unbeaten during the regular season, he was disappointed to finish second in that event by six-hundreths of a second. Similarly, he placed third by four-tenths of a second in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Rexius took those state medals home and hung them on his bedroom door.

For the past year, each time he walked in and out of his room, he could hear the sharp clang of the two medals banging into each other. It was a not-so-subtle reminder of what he still hopes to accomplish.

`I thought I would win both races last year, but it didn't happen,' he said. `That's what I'm going for this week. I just need to stay relaxed and have fun. If I can do that, the times and places will take care of themselves.'
