Like it or not, and he does not, Oregon men's track and field coach Martin Smith is ready to take a run at the NCAA's latest tweaking of his sport.
It is called regional qualifying, a two-day test at four sites around the country to essentially determine the fields for the national championships next month.
The Ducks and other teams and athletes from seven western states - Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and Utah - begin the two-day West Regional competition at Stanford, Calif., this afternoon.
At stake are tickets to the national meet, scheduled for June 11-14 at Sacramento, Calif.
The first five finishers from each event in each of the regions (West, Midwest, Mideast and East) advance to the NCAA Championships. Another six to eight athletes for each event will be selected at-large nationally based on season-best performances to compensate for those who were sick, injured,...
