New York mother Jean Joachim gives a hearty chuckle when I tell her I'm sorry there will probably be a large Oregon market for her new book, "Beyond the Bake Sale" ($13.95, St. Martin's Griffin).

After 11 years raising funds for P.S. 87, her children's Manhattan public school, Joachim has become accustomed to finding good news among bad, such as interest in her book because of Oregon's perennial school funding crisis.

Case in point: Joachim insists that schools become tighter, more close-knit communities when parents must pull together to raise funds.
