CORRECTION (ran 4/2/03): Eugene Ballet will present "The Firebird" at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Incorrect dates were listed on page G1 Sunday.

The first time Toni Pimble choreographed "The Firebird," she almost went batty.

It was in September 1982. The fledgling Eugene Ballet Company was preparing to perform during the opening weekend of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts.

But first, the acoustics in the new Silva Concert Hall needed to be "tuned" - at the very same time Pimble was in the hall with scenic designer Peter Dean Beck, setting the lighting patterns.

"Everybody was scrambling to finish the hall in time for the Eugene Symphony to open it," Pimble recalls. "They were working on the enhanced sound system. Peter and I were in there for about five hours, and the entire time they were playing one tone after another. We came out of there shaking."
