Bill Griffiths and Jill Hubbard have always encouraged their 17-year-old son, Morgan Griffiths, to follow his bliss.
Last weekend, Morgan's passion steered him to Columbus, Ohio, where he became the first Oregonian ever to win the National High School Chess Championship.
The lanky, dark-haired home-schooler started playing serious chess just five years ago after hooking up with the esteemed South Eugene High School Chess Club. He quickly became one of a talented trio who may well be the best young chess players in Oregon, according to their coach, Jerry Ramey.
Any one of the three - the other two being Oleg Zaikov, a South Eugene freshman, and Ryan Thurlow, a South Eugene junior - could have taken top honors at the national competition, Ramey says. As it was, out of 362 competitors in the top-level division, Thurlow placed 16th and Zaikov 28th.
"Those guys, they're right at master level," Ramey said. "They're very, very good."
