Cities that lose professional football teams usually end up spending significantly more money to get another one, according to a study done for the citizens task force on Chargers issues.

The task force's report, completed earlier this month, was discussed by the San Diego City Council last week. The council adopted the task force's recommendation to begin negotiations with the team concurrent with an already-launched audit of the Chargers books. The team claims it has met a triggering threshold, or out clause, in its lease at Qualcomm Stadium, and is asking the city to help it build a new stadium.

According to a study done by the Barrett Sports Group, the outside consultant hired by San Diego officials, cities that lost a team usually had to build a new stadium to attract another franchise. Additional costs, usually borne by the owners of the new franchise, were excessive league expansion fees.
