First products under transformed DTI business support also announced A comprehensive guide for new and growing enterprises to help save time and money when starting up and help them understand and comply with regulations was launched today by Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt.

She also announced the first new products available under the DTI's transformed business support programme - including the extension of the popular Small Firms Loan Guarantee to encourage banks to lend to small businesses - and a new DTI Directory, an internet-based resource allowing customers access to grants and schemes available.

The No-Nonsense Guide is aimed at prospective entrepreneurs and those that have recently started up, providing a clear and simple insight into what they need to know from the legal aspects of setting up to issues that might affect a growing business.

The guide includes help and advice on issues including: - how to form a business, including the pros and cons of the different business structures and sorting out tax, national insurance, VAT and business rates; - sales and marketing - including advice on terms and conditions of sale and selling and marketing electronically; - how to protect new ideas and obtain patents and trademarks; - how to access government grants and other support; and - complying with health and safety legislation and a step-by-step guide to taking on your first employee.
