The role of women in Canadian society has changed drastically in the last 85 years. Women's rights as persons are entrenched, and there are more women in politics and high-level corporate positions then ever before. Poverty, violence, and discrimination are still the common plight of millions of women around the world. Canadian women in high-level positions are urged to use their status as an opportunity to uplift other women, worldwide. Speech to the Headquarters Women's Advisory Committee (HWAC) Networking Dinner, in Ottawa, Ontario October 23, 2002.
First let me share a little personal info. I'm 58 years old: 4 children, the youngest is 30 and 6 grandchildren. They are my reward. I'm fiercely independent. Always a rebel! But, let me tell you I was a great cook.
My parents were born and raised in Canada. My father was in business, a manufacturer on Spadina Avenue. My mother, Nana, now a great grandmother, is and was non-traditional. She always worked outside the home. She ran the family business and was an active community volunteer. She's 82...
