Let it rain - and rain

Columnist Bob Welch laments the record-breaking rainy days of Western Oregon (Register-Guard, April 27). To me this weather is the last line of defense against the growing biological threat to the north.

I'm referring to the legions of grass stalks preparing to launch endless rounds of pollen aimed at me. This attack will leave me scrambling for shelter and seeking any protection available.

As I lie wounded with a wet cloth on my eyes and a surgical mask on my face, I will once again consider the expense of medicine, allergy specialist and lost productivity. I will ponder how much grass field acreage could be purchased and put out of production for the cost of the same.

Let it rain until August.

Where are our priorities?

I thought I'd run out of outrage and grief.

My country has become a rogue nation on a planet being destroyed by its human occupants. The cultural heritage of one of the oldest regions of the world has been destroyed, while our military has more important things to do than protect it. We have allowed the USA Patriot Act to strip us of the very rights our administration tells us it's protecting, etc.

Now my outrage is local. Spending $125 million or more for a new basketball arena is obscene! We lack funds to educate children, to provide for the physically and mentally ill, to help the homeless and provide universal health care. Don't tell me it's private money and has no relation to education; what...
