Hoffman Estates' string of 13 consecutive volleyball match victories in two-game sweeps ended in Game 1 against Conant on Tuesday.

But the Hawks (15-3, 5-0) still won the key Mid-Suburban West match and took a one-match lead on the Cougars (13-4, 4-10 with the 13-15, 15-11, 15-4 decision.

"It was the boys' goal at the beginning of the season to win conference, and this is a step along the way," said Hoffman Estates coach Dawn Shepherd.

"They are a good team," said Conant coach Tom Dvoratchek.
