Last weekend, I walked into my local natural foods store and came face-to-face with a display of large, ripe strawberries. They looked so good at $1.99 a pound that I bought about 12 ounces and earmarked them for Monday's lunch.

I later offered one to a friend who declined on the basis that the red berry didn't fit into his diet.

"Which diet is that?" I asked.

"Atkins," he responded.

In my head, I mumbled: "This has gone past the point of sad and is now headed for ridiculous."
