Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis are often the subject of brief comparisons, usually to the latter's disadvantage. Brian R. Dirck has produced a thoughtful, original, and well-written extended comparative biography of the two Civil War presidents. By implication it is a study of the relationship between culture and personality, for each man is viewed as having been shaped by the complex interaction between his environment and his own choices.

Although both were the sons of undistinguished Kentucky farmers, they came to maturity in different kinds of societies: Lincoln in the open, pluralistic middle landscape of commercializing Illinois; Davis in the closed community of his Mississippi plantation "Brierfield."
