Article Excerpt There's no science to making music. It's art, and communication, and finding a common language of notes. That's what the members of Tama have managed to do. Bringing together musicians from Mali (n'goni player/percussionist/singer Tom Diakite), Guinea-Bissau (percussion/singer Djanuno Dabo) and England (guitarist Sam Mills), their music creates some lovely melodies (and with the addition of singer Mamani Keita in 2002, some especially wonderful vocals) that sit both inside and outside West Africa. Curiously, though, it was Indian music that first brought them together.
"I met Tom and Djanuno because we were all playing with Paban Das Baul, the Bengali singer," recalls Sam Mills. "After Paban and I did Real Sugar, we were doing some concerts. He introduced me to them, and we ended up doing some stuff by ourselves. We recorded some things very informally ... and it sounded really good. Real World asked us if we wanted to make a record, and we said okay."
Their debut proved to be a critical success, if not a commercial one. "I think it sold about five copies worldwide!" Mills laughs. That didn't stop them from returning to the studio however. And although they made the new record on a small budget, the sound is even more cohesive.
