Barring is the art of exerting pressure across the entire fingerboard with the underside of one of the fretting hand fingers, generally the first finger. The advantage here is that barring with one finger frees all the others to perform additional tasks farther up the neck, essentially allowing you to function as if you had two or three extra fingers. Since barring is one of those "rite-of-passage" skills that separates intermediate from entry-level players, and since so many guitar students find the skill problematic, I'll do my best to demystify it in this column.

I became overly acquainted with barre chords quite early in my playing career. There really wasn't much in the way of formal folk-music instruction in the mid-1960s, but I conscientiously followed the advice of writers in Sing Out! and other folk music periodicals, and spent lots of time both listening to recordings and attempting to emulate what I heard. I can't exactly recall if I didn't know about capos, or couldn't imagine that recording artists would "stoop" to using them, but in any event I wound up learning all sorts of fingerstyle solos and accompaniments in a pretty unusual style.
