The winner of the 2003 Newbery Medal is Avi for Crispin: The Cross of Lead (Hyperion). The House of the Scorpion (Jackson/Atheneum) by Nancy Farmer, Pictures of Hollis Woods (Lamb/Random) by Patricia Reilly Giff, Hoot (Knopf) by Carl Hiaasen, A Corner of the Universe (Scholastic) by Ann M. Martin, and Surviving the Applewhites (HarperCollins) by Stephanie S. Tolan were named Newbery Honor Books.

Eric Rohmann is the recipient of the 2003 Caldecott Medal for My Friend Rabbit (Roaring Brook). Three titles were cited as Caldecott Honor Books: The Spider and the Fly (Simon) illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi and written by Mary Howitt; Hondo and Fabian (Holt) by Peter McCarty; and Noah's Ark (Seastar/North-South) by Jerry Pinkney.

The 2003 Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award will go to James Cross Giblin, author of The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler (Clarion). Four Sibert Honor Books were named: Six Days in October: The Stock Market Crash of 1929 (Atheneum) by Karen Blumenthal; Hole in My Life...
